Vitamin D pills could stop colds or flu

The BMJ (British Medical Journal) recently published the results of an investigations on the effectiveness of supplements to prevent acute respiratory tract infections.

Pooling data from 25 separate trials involving 11,321 people the research found that Vitamin D supplements could spare more than three million people from colds or flu in the UK each year. The most benefits are gained by the individuals with established vitamin D deficiency and by providing daily administration.

The study said one person would be spared infection for every 33 taking vitamin D supplements. To give an idea about what this means we can consider that this is more effective than flu vaccination, which needs to treat 40 to prevent one case.

Considering the safety of vitamin D supplementation this is exciting news!

The best way to can get vitamin D is by exposing our skin to the sun without protections for a defined amount of time. At our latitudes due to the intensity of solar radiation and mostly in summer, we must carefully measure the non protected exposure time to avoid negative effects. In peak times (UV radiation from 5.5 and over) only a few minutes of exposure can cause severe burns on sensitive skins.
